Den Meeting- Nov. 9, 2010 SHOWMAN ACTIVITY BADGE

Today we finished the requirements for the SHOWMAN Activity Badge!

We fulfilled requirements #1,#2, #3, #4 and #5.

Basically we wrote a puppet play, made the puppets, built a simple stage and put on a puppet show for our den.

We are excited to put on our Puppet Plays for the Pack Meeting next week!

We will be presenting "The Snowboarder's vs. Monsters and King Kong",
as well as "The Evil Chicken."

Boys who wore their cap, shirt w/ Webelos colors, neckerchief & slide and brought their book received a Butterfinger.  We are starting to look really good as a Den!  Keep it up!  Let us teach the boys pride in how they look!  More Butterfingers will be available at future Den meetings!

Comments Please!!

Notice there is an ability to comment on the posts in this blog!
I will pay attention to these comments!
If you could just say something really quick and short then at least I would know you are getting the information!

Webelos Requirements : Attention to Parents/Webelos Responsibilities!!!

In this post I have included the Webelos Badge Requirements as listed on page #49 in the Webelos Handbook, because...

As a Den,
we are shooting to achieve and receive the
Webelos Badge
at the
February 8th Pack Meeting,
which will be the
"Blue & Gold Banquet!!!".

So concerning the requirements that follow, that which I have highlighted in Red is what you as a parent and your Webelo need to work on at home!  That which is in black and blue will be addressed in our Den Meetings.

In a nutshell, you need to do 3 things at home for the Webelos Badge:

1) Parents read the Webelos Scout Parent Guide and sign that you have read it.
2) Webelo needs to earn the Fitness Activity Badge.
3) Webelo either earns the Faith in God Award or chooses option e of #8 and then completes the Know/Commit/Practice cycle.

Here are the Official Requirements:

1.  Have an adult member of your family read the Webelos Scout Parent Guide that comes with the Webelos book (pages 1-22) and sign that they have read it in the book.

2.  Be an active member of your Webelos den for 3 months (Active means having good attendance, paying den dues, working on den projects).

3.  Know and explain the meaning of the Webelos badge.

4.  Point out the three special parts of the Webelos Scout uniform. Tell when to wear the uniform and when not to wear it.

5.  Earn the Fitness and Citizen activity badges and one other activity badge from a different activity group .

6.  Plan and lead a flag ceremony in your den that includes the U.S. flag.

7.  Show that you know and understand the requirements to be a Boy Scout.

a. Demonstrate the Scout salute, Scout sign, and Scout handshake. Explain when you would use them.
b. Explain the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto, and Scout slogan
c. Explain and agree to follow the Outdoor Code.

8.  Faith
After completing the rest of requirement 8, do these (a, b, and c):

a. Know: Tell what you have learned about faith.
b. Commit: Tell how these faith experiences help you live your duty to God. Name one faith practice that you will continue to do in the future.
c. Practice: After doing these requirements, tell what you have learned about your beliefs.

And do one of these (d OR e):

d. Earn the religious emblem of your faith* LDS- Faith in God Award

e. Do two of these:
  • Attend the mosque, church, synagogue, temple, or other religious organization of your choice, talk with your religious leader about your beliefs. Tell your family and your Webelos den leader what you learned.
  • Discuss with your family and Webelos den leader how your religious beliefs fit in with the Scout Oath and Scout Law, and what character-building traits your religious beliefs have in common with the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
  • With your religious leader, discuss and make a plan to do two things you think will help you draw nearer to God. Do these things  for a month.
  • For at least a month, pray or meditate reverently each day as taught by your family, and by your church, temple, mosque, synagogue, or religious group.
  • Under the direction of your religious leader, do an act of service for someone else. Talk about your service with your family and Webelos den leader. Tell them how it made you feel.
  • List at least two ways you believe you have lived according to your religious beliefs.
* If you earned your faith's religious emblem earlier in Cub Scouting, and your faith does not have a Webelos religious emblem, you must complete requirement 8e.
Completion of requirement 8e does not qualify a youth to receive the religious emblem of his faith.

Den Meeting - Nov. 2, 2010 SHOWMAN ACTIVITY BADGE cont.

Yesterday our Den continued working on the
SHOWMAN Activity Badge!

We worked some more on our puppets and worked on writing a play/skit for our puppets to perform at the upcoming Pack Meeting!

Next week we will finish creating our play/skits, make a simple stage to use for the skits, and practice the skits.
We will also practice a Flag Ceremony for the Pack Meeting.

No Longer Private

Although I initially thought that I would keep record of attendance on this blog and even perhaps post pictures, and so I had thought to keep it private, I have now decided to keep record of attendance elsewhere and I will not post pictures with the boys in them, unless you give me permission.
Making this blog public will make it easier to access and this is important.
First and foremost, I want this to be an easily accessible place for you to get the information you need.

Uniform Incentive!

Yesterday at Den Mtg.,
I told the boys that if they came next week in their full uniform and wore it for the whole Den Mtg, they would get a candy bar.

Full uniform includes 4 things:

Shirt
Cap
Neckerchief with slide
and Book

Just so you know, when I attended a Cub Scout Leadership Meeting, I learned that some of the purpose for the Uniform is to help the boys prepare to wear the uniform of the priesthood, white shirt and tie, etc.  Wearing the Webelos Uniform is not an easy thing for my Webelo.  But it is a great opportunity for me to work with him on taking care of his uniform, because most often he doesn't.
I will be going to the Scout Store before the next Den Mtg., if you want me to pick up a book or a part of the uniform I would be glad to and then you can pay me when I deliver it to you!

Just let me know:

Den Meeting - October 26th, 2010 SHOWMAN ACTIVITY BADGE

IN PROGRESS...
SHOWMAN ACTIVITY BADGE
Accomplished #13, #14 and #20.
Started working on #2, #3, & #7.

NEXT DEN MTG. - WE WILL CONTINUE WORKING ON THE SHOWMAN ACTIVITY BADGE, particularly #2, #3, #7 and others in the Puppetry Category.

Look forward to some Puppet Shows at our next Pack Mtg, which will be Nov. 16th!

Yesterday was the first day CR and I worked with the Webelos!  And yesterday was J's first day of Webelos!  Welcome J!

We worked on the SHOWMAN Activity Badge, p. 430 of the Webelos book.

We did 2 activities from the Music category, #13 and #14, even though we only had to do 1 activity from this section.

#13 is Draw a staff.  Draw on it a clef, a sharp, a flat, natural, note and rest.  Tell what each is used for.
We did this on a white board.

#14 is Show the difference between 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 time by beating time or playing an instrument.
We did this through clapping.

We did 1 activity from the Drama category which was #20.

#20 is Make a list of stage directions.  Tell what they mean.

We did this on the white board and we learned that going up means towards the back and down means towards the audience.  Stage left and right are from the actor's perspective and center is center!

Then we started with the Puppetry category and worked on #1, #3, and #7.

#1 is Write a puppet play about one of your Webelos den activities or a subject of your choice.

#3 is Make a set of puppets or marionettes for the play you have written or for another play.

#7 is There are sock, stick, and finger puppets.  There are paper bag puppets and marionettes.  Explain their differences and show any puppets you have made for this badge.

Intro to this blog!

Parents,

I am thinking a blog would be a great way to help keep track of the progress made with our Webelos!
So this is a place I am going to record the activity badges that we are working on and attendance so we know who was there and accomplished the activities.
This will be a private blog so you will need to be invited to look at it.
I will also use this to help communicate other kinds of information like upcoming events.
This will be a central place for information that you will know you can go to.
In other words it won't be just another e-mail that gets lost among other e-mails.
I hope it will be useful to you!
